Strength training for back pain in Cork
A back that goes every few months, a stiff morning, a disc that flared once and never quite let you forget it. If you have been told to strengthen your back and were not sure where to start, our personal trainers build 30-minute sessions around it at our Douglas and Ballincollig gyms, following whatever your GP or physio has advised.
Back pain and training
Why a stronger back is a happier back
For most ordinary back pain, the guidelines are clear: keep moving and get stronger. Rest makes it worse. Coached loading makes it better.
Strong hips, strong back
Most backs hurt because the hips and glutes are not doing their share. We build them first, so the spine stops carrying loads it was never meant to.
Learn to hinge
Picking things up properly is a skill. We teach the hip hinge and the deadlift pattern with light loads until it is second nature, then add weight gradually.
Core that actually works
Not sit-ups. Bracing, carrying and holding under load, the kind of core strength that protects a back when you lift a child or a suitcase.
Confidence, not fear
The biggest problem with a bad back is the fear of using it. Progressive, coached loading is how people stop guarding and start trusting their back again.
Around your flare-ups
Some weeks the back is cranky. The session changes on the day, works around it, and you leave looser than you arrived rather than worse.
Alongside your physio
If you have exercises from a physio we fold them in. If you have been told what to avoid, we avoid it. Bring the advice and we build around it.
How it works
Training with a bad back at ATP
Back pain is the most common reason people stop exercising, and the most common reason they should start. For the ordinary kind, the stiff, achy, goes-every-so-often kind, the research is about as clear as it gets: staying active and getting stronger beats rest, and it beats most of the other things people try. The problem is nobody shows you how to do it without hurting yourself, so people either avoid the gym or go in and do the wrong thing.
That is where coaching earns its keep. A back loaded badly gets worse. A back loaded well, with the hips and core doing their job and the weight going up in sensible steps, gets stronger and stops complaining.
What a session looks like
You train 1:2, one coach and two clients, each on your own programme, for 30 minutes. The first few weeks are about the basics done properly: a hip hinge, a squat to a box, a row, a carry, bracing the trunk under light load. Then the weight climbs a little each session. Most people notice the day to day stiffness easing within a month or two, well before they would call themselves strong.
Flare-ups and the days it is at you
Tell your coach at the start of every session how the back is. On a bad day we work around it, keep you moving and send you home better than you came in. Missing a session is fine too. Our no-expiry packs never lapse, so a bad week costs you nothing.
Working with your GP or physio
Whatever they have advised about what to do and what to avoid, we follow it and build the programme around it. If you have physio exercises we fold them into the session. If your pain is new, severe, or comes with numbness or weakness in the legs, see your GP first, and then come to us.
What we are not
We are not physiotherapists and we do not diagnose. We are a coached gym where people with bad backs train safely every week and, for the most part, stop thinking about their backs.
Getting started
Your first session is free. Claim it below and mention your back in the form or when we ring. It is a real coached 30-minute session at Douglas or Ballincollig, no card and no commitment. If you are coming out of physio, our what comes after physio page is written for exactly that stage.

FAQ
Back pain and training questions
If yours is not here, give us a ring. We would rather talk it through.
Is it safe to lift weights with a bad back?
For ordinary back pain, yes, and it is recommended. The key is technique, starting light and building gradually, with a coach guiding you. We follow whatever your GP or physio has advised.
Will deadlifts hurt my back?
Done badly, anything can. Done properly, the hip hinge and deadlift are among the best things for a back because they teach you to lift with the hips. We start with a light kettlebell and build from there.
Should I be doing sit-ups for my core?
No. Bracing, carrying and holding under load do far more for a back than sit-ups and are much kinder to it.
My back is sore today. Should I skip the session?
Usually no. Tell your coach and the session changes. Gentle movement almost always helps a cranky back more than a day on the couch. If the pain is severe or new, see your GP first.
I have a disc problem. Can I still train?
Most people with disc issues can, and do, with the right guidance. Tell us what your GP or physio has said and we build around it.
How long before my back feels better?
Most people feel the day to day stiffness easing within four to eight weeks of two sessions a week. Strength keeps building for months after that.
How much does it cost?
Rolling memberships start at €179 every 4 weeks for two sessions a week, and our no-expiry packs never lapse. Your first session is free, no card and no commitment.
