Exercise after weight loss surgery in Cork
The surgery does the weight. What it does not do is decide whether that weight comes off as fat or as muscle. That part is training, and it is the part most people are given least help with. Our personal trainers build 30-minute sessions around it at our Douglas and Ballincollig gyms, following whatever your surgical team has advised.
After bariatric surgery
Keeping the muscle while the weight comes off
Rapid weight loss strips muscle as well as fat unless you give the body a reason to keep it. Strength training is that reason.
Keep the muscle
Without strength work, a big share of what you lose after surgery is muscle. Two sessions a week tells the body to burn fat and keep the strength.
Energy on a small plate
Eating less means training has to be efficient. Short, coached, strength-focused sessions give the most back for the least.
When your team says go
We do not start anyone until their surgeon or dietitian has cleared them, and we follow whatever limits you have been given.
Protein and the plan
Our habit-based nutrition coaching works alongside your bariatric dietitian's plan, never instead of it.
Skin, shape and confidence
Strength training is the thing that changes how a body looks and feels as the weight goes, and it does wonders for confidence in a room you might have avoided for years.
Long term, not a sprint
The weight comes off over a year or two. The training is what keeps it off afterwards, and it is built to last that long.
How it works
Training after weight loss surgery at ATP
A gastric sleeve, bypass or band changes what you can eat and the weight follows. What surgery cannot do is tell the body what to lose. Left to itself, rapid weight loss takes a lot of muscle with the fat, and that is why people can end up lighter but weaker, more tired and less able than they hoped. Strength training is the fix, and every bariatric guideline recommends it.
It has to be done sensibly. You are eating far less than before, you may be low on energy and protein in the early months, and there are limits after surgery on lifting and on how hard to push. So the training is short, coached, and built around what your team has told you.
What a session looks like
You train 1:2, one coach and two clients, each on your own programme, for 30 minutes. We start with light loads and the big movements: sitting to a box and standing, a hinge, a row, a press, a carry. Load goes up gradually as your energy and your team's limits allow. Two sessions a week is the target, and the sessions stay short because you have less fuel to spend.
Working with your surgeon and dietitian
Whatever they have advised about when to start and what to avoid, we follow it and build the programme around it. If you have been given lifting limits after surgery, we work inside them. Our nutrition coaching sits alongside your bariatric dietitian's plan and never overrides it. We are happy to talk to your team directly.
What we are not
We are not a medical service and we do not replace your surgical team or dietitian. We are a coached gym where people rebuild after weight loss surgery and keep the strength that makes the new weight feel like theirs.
Getting started
Your first session is free. Claim it below and tell us where you are since surgery in the form or when we ring. It is a real coached 30-minute session at Douglas or Ballincollig, no card and no commitment. If you are on a GLP-1 medication instead of, or as well as, surgery, our training on GLP-1s page covers the same muscle question.

FAQ
After weight loss surgery questions
If yours is not here, give us a ring. We would rather talk it through.
When can I start training after a gastric sleeve or bypass?
That is your surgeon's call. Typically gentle activity starts early and strength training a few weeks to a couple of months after surgery. Tell us what you have been told and we work from there.
Why do I need strength training if the weight is coming off anyway?
Because without it a large share of the weight you lose is muscle, and you end up weaker and more tired. Strength training keeps the muscle so what goes is fat.
I have very little energy. Can I really train?
Yes, in short, gentle, coached sessions. We keep them efficient and build only as your energy and protein intake allow. Most people find training gives energy back rather than taking it.
Will you tell me what to eat?
Our nutrition coaching works alongside your bariatric dietitian's plan, never instead of it. We help with habits and consistency, they set the medical side.
I have not been in a gym in years and I am self-conscious. Is that OK?
Very. The room is small and friendly, you train with your own coach on your own programme, and nobody is looking at anyone. A lot of our members started exactly there.
Is it a class or personal training?
Personal training, 1:2. One coach with two clients, each on their own programme, so the work fits your energy and your team's limits.
How much does it cost?
Rolling memberships start at €179 every 4 weeks for two sessions a week, and our no-expiry packs never lapse. Your first session is free, no card and no commitment.

"I previously spent 15+ years dieting and had tried every type of training (crossfit, running, classes). Thanks to atp fitness I now love going to the gym and really enjoy the personal training and classes they offer. They also give loads of free advice and I have finally quit getting on and off the diet bandwagon. They showed me how to get the results I wanted in a maintainable and realistic way."
"I am thrilled I started going to ATP fitness. I had put off committing to PT sessions far too long. Since I started my wellbeing has improved , my agility is much better and weight loss/ body mass is reducing."

"Really friendly trainers who are genuinely invested in seeing you progress towards your goals. The first gym setting i have been to where i look forward to going and dont see my training as a chore i have to complete. Never feel like i am being put under pressure with regards to weight loss and measurements and as a result the process is so much more enjoyable and makes it more likely that it will be something i will stick with ."
