Fibromyalgia and training

Gentle, paced, and never pushed through

Exercise is recommended for fibromyalgia, but the dose matters more than anything. Too much and you crash. The right amount, built up slowly, is one of the few things that reliably helps.

Pacing, not pushing

We start below what you can do, not at it, and build in tiny steps. The goal is to finish every session with energy in the tank.

Your energy on the day

Every session starts with how you are. Good day, a little more. Bad day, a little less or a gentle mobility session. Nothing is fixed.

Strength that eases pain

Gentle, progressive strength work is linked with less pain and better function in fibromyalgia. It is slow, and it works.

No boom and bust

The cycle of a good week, overdoing it, then a bad fortnight is the thing to break. A coach who holds you back on the good days is how.

Sleep and mood

People often notice sleep and mood improving before strength does. That alone is worth turning up for.

Your own coach

Personal training with the same small team who know your story, so you never have to explain yourself from scratch.

How it works

Training with fibromyalgia or chronic fatigue at ATP

Fibromyalgia and chronic fatigue share a cruel feature: the thing that helps most, gentle regular exercise, is also the thing that can make you worse if you get the dose wrong. Most people have learned that the hard way, with a class or a programme that felt fine on the day and cost them a week. So they stop, get weaker, and the pain and fatigue get worse.

The way out is pacing. Start below what you can do, build in steps so small they feel silly, and never chase a good day. That is very hard to do on your own and quite easy with a coach whose job is to hold you back as much as push you on.

What a session looks like

You train 1:2, one coach and two clients, each on your own programme, for 30 minutes. We start with light, simple movements: sitting to a box and standing, gentle rows and presses, short carries, easy mobility. Rest as much as you need. The load goes up only when a level has felt comfortable for a while, and comes down without fuss when it has not. Sessions are short on purpose.

Bad weeks and flares

Tell your coach at the start of every session how you are. On a bad day the session gets lighter or shorter, or becomes a gentle mobility session. Missing a week or a fortnight is fine. Our no-expiry packs never lapse, so a flare costs you nothing.

Working with your GP, physio or consultant

Whatever they have advised, we follow it and build the programme around it. If you have physio exercises or a pacing plan, we work inside it. We are happy to talk to them directly if that helps.

What we are not

We are not a medical service and we do not diagnose or treat. We are a coached gym where people with fibromyalgia and chronic fatigue train gently, at their own pace, and slowly get stronger.

FAQ

Fibromyalgia and training questions

If yours is not here, give us a ring. We would rather talk it through.

Will exercise make my fibromyalgia worse?

The wrong amount can. The right amount, started gently and built up slowly, is one of the few things shown to reduce pain and improve function. Pacing is everything, and it is what we coach.

What if I crash after a session?

Then we started too high, and we drop it. The aim is to finish every session with energy left. We would rather go too slowly than too fast.

How short can a session be?

As short as you need. Sessions are 30 minutes but on a low day we might use ten of them for gentle movement and send you home.

Do I need my GP's OK?

A quick word with your GP or consultant is sensible if you are starting from scratch or your condition has changed. Then tell us what they said and we build around it.

Is it a class or personal training?

Personal training, 1:2. One coach with two clients, each on their own programme, so nobody is keeping pace with anyone and the session is yours.

What if I need to stop for a while?

Then you stop, and pick it up again when you can. Our no-expiry packs never lapse, so you only ever pay for sessions you use.

How much does it cost?

Rolling memberships start at €179 every 4 weeks for two sessions a week, and our no-expiry packs never lapse. Your first session is free, no card and no commitment.

This guide is general information from our coaches, not medical advice. Always follow what your GP, consultant or physio has told you.

"Both gyms are warm and welcoming and trainers take the time at the start of each class to check in on the people attending for injuries and energy wise. You are never pushed to beyond your limits but always encouraged to reach your full potential."

"The trainers are so friendly and meet you where you’re at on any given day, while also being encouraging and pushing you out of your comfort zone. I’ve found the atmosphere in other gyms to be a bit intimidating but it’s a really relaxed and positive atmosphere in ATP, which I’ve found to be conducive to a sustainable routine."
