Golf and training

What the gym does for your golf

Every tour player has a strength coach now, and it is not for show. Distance comes from the ground up, and consistency comes from a body that can repeat the same swing on the 17th as the 1st.

Distance

Clubhead speed comes from the legs, hips and core, not the arms. Stronger glutes and a faster hip turn are worth more yards than any driver you can buy.

Rotation and mobility

Hips and mid-back that actually turn. Most amateur swings are limited by stiffness, not technique, and mobility work opens up the turn you are missing.

A back that lasts 18

The golf swing is hard on backs. A strong core and hips take the strain off the spine so you finish the round as fresh as you started it.

Consistency

Fatigue wrecks swings. Strength and endurance in the right places mean the swing on the back nine looks like the swing on the front.

Playing into your 60s and 70s

The golfers who are still playing well at 70 are the ones who kept their strength and balance. This is how you keep yours.

Around your season

Heavier strength work in the winter, lighter and faster in the season, and a plan that fits around your tee times.

"Great trainers with excellent knowledge and most of all, they are all sound! The trainers are highly approachable and never judge! The spin classes are testing but great fun. The individual PT sessions are my favourite and are a game changer with specific goals discussed before and a plan developed to achieve them!"

How it works

Strength training for golfers at ATP

Golf looks gentle and it is anything but. The swing is one of the fastest, most rotational movements in sport, repeated eighty or a hundred times a round, on a body that spends the rest of the week sitting down. That is why so many golfers have sore backs, stiff hips and a swing that falls apart after twelve holes. And it is why the strength coach has become as normal a part of the professional game as the caddie.

You do not need a tour programme. You need stronger legs and hips, a core that can brace and rotate, mobility in the places that have stiffened up, and a coach who understands what a golfer's body has to do.

What a session looks like

You train 1:2, one coach and two clients, each on your own programme, for 30 minutes. The programme is built around the swing: squats and hinges for the legs and hips, rotational work for the core, mobility for the hips and thoracic spine, and single-leg balance for the finish. Load goes up steadily. Most golfers notice more distance and an easier back within a couple of months, and the winter is the best time to make real gains.

Sore backs, shoulders and elbows

Tell us where it hurts and we build around it. A lot of golf injuries come from weakness and stiffness somewhere else in the chain, and fixing that fixes the pain. If you are already under a physio, bring their advice and we work inside it. Our back pain page covers the back side in more detail.

Older golfers

If you are in your 50s, 60s or 70s and the game is getting harder, strength training is the single best thing you can do to keep playing. Distance, balance and stamina all respond to it at any age. Our over 40s and over 60s pages are written for exactly that.

FAQ

Golf fitness questions

If yours is not here, give us a ring. We would rather talk it through.

Will lifting weights ruin my swing?

No. That is an old myth. Strength training done properly makes you faster and more consistent, which is why every tour player does it. We keep the mobility work in so you turn better, not worse.

How much distance can I gain?

It depends where you start, but golfers who add strength in the legs and hips typically see a real jump in clubhead speed within a few months. Stiff, weak golfers have the most to gain.

I have a bad back from golf. Can I still train?

Yes, and it is usually the reason to start. A stronger core and hips take the strain off the back during the swing. Tell us about it and, if you have physio advice, bring it.

When is the best time to train?

Winter for building strength, in-season for keeping it. Two 30-minute sessions a week fits around most people's golf without getting in the way of it.

I am in my 60s. Is it too late?

Not remotely. Older golfers get the biggest gains in distance and stamina from strength training, and it is what keeps people playing into their 70s and beyond.

Can I train with a friend from the club?

Yes. Our sessions are 1:2, one coach with two clients, so two of you can book the same slot, each on your own programme.

How much does it cost?

Rolling memberships start at €179 every 4 weeks for two sessions a week, and our no-expiry packs never lapse. Your first session is free, no card and no commitment.
