Blood pressure and training

What strength training does for the numbers

Regular exercise lowers blood pressure and improves cholesterol, and the guidelines now include strength training alongside walking. Done properly, it is one of the safest things you can do.

Lower resting pressure

Regular strength training lowers resting blood pressure over weeks and months. Not dramatically on any one day, but steadily, and it holds as long as you keep going.

Better cholesterol

Training plus a few food habits shifts the cholesterol picture in the right direction, and muscle helps the body handle fat and sugar better.

Breathe, do not brace

The one rule: no holding your breath under load. We coach your breathing so blood pressure stays where it should during the session.

Moderate loads, more reps

Sessions use moderate weights and steady breathing rather than heavy grinding lifts, which is how the guidelines recommend it for blood pressure.

Weight and waist

If weight is part of the picture, our habit-based nutrition coaching runs alongside the training, one change at a time.

Working with your GP

Whatever your GP or nurse has advised, we follow it. Tell us about any medication and we plan around it, and we are happy to talk to them directly.

How it works

Training with high blood pressure or cholesterol at ATP

High blood pressure and high cholesterol are the two most common findings at a routine check, and exercise is at the top of the advice for both. Walking is the usual suggestion and it is a good one. What most people are not told is that strength training helps too, and the guidelines now recommend two or three sessions a week of it alongside the walking. It lowers resting blood pressure, improves cholesterol, helps with weight, and builds the muscle that keeps the whole system working.

The part that needs a bit of care is how you lift. Holding your breath and straining against a heavy weight spikes blood pressure. Moderate loads, more repetitions and steady breathing do not. That is exactly how we coach it.

What a session looks like

You train 1:2, one coach and two clients, each on your own programme, for 30 minutes. The programme uses moderate loads and higher repetitions, with breathing coached throughout and a warm up and cool down built in. Sitting to a box and standing, rows, presses, carries, and a bit of steady work on the bike or rower. Load goes up gradually. Two sessions a week plus your walking is the sweet spot.

Working with your GP

Whatever your GP or practice nurse has advised, we follow it and build the programme around it. If you are on blood pressure medication, tell us, because some of it affects how you feel during exercise and we plan around that. If your blood pressure is very high or not yet controlled, get it checked and managed first, and then come to us. We are happy to talk to your GP directly if that helps.

What we are not

We are not a medical service. We do not diagnose, we do not adjust medication, and we do not replace your GP. We are a coached gym where people with high blood pressure and cholesterol train safely every week and see their numbers improve.

FAQ

Blood pressure and training questions

If yours is not here, give us a ring. We would rather talk it through.

Is strength training safe with high blood pressure?

For most people with controlled blood pressure, yes, and it is recommended. The key is moderate loads, steady breathing and no straining, which is how we coach it. If your pressure is very high or not yet managed, see your GP first.

Will exercise bring my blood pressure down?

Regular training typically lowers resting blood pressure over weeks and months. Everyone is different and your GP tracks the numbers, but it is one of the most reliable non-drug measures there is.

Does it help cholesterol too?

Yes, especially combined with a few food changes. Training improves the cholesterol picture and helps the body manage fat and sugar.

I am on blood pressure tablets. Does that change anything?

Tell us what you are on. Some medications affect heart rate or how you feel standing up quickly, so we plan the session around it. Keep taking them as prescribed.

Should I hold my breath when I lift?

No. That is the one thing we are strict about. Breathe out on the effort, keep the loads moderate, and blood pressure stays where it should during the session.

Do you help with the food side too?

Yes, if you want it. Our habit-based nutrition coaching is built for exactly this, one realistic change at a time.

How much does it cost?

Rolling memberships start at €179 every 4 weeks for two sessions a week, and our no-expiry packs never lapse. Your first session is free, no card and no commitment.

This guide is general information from our coaches, not medical advice. Always follow what your GP, consultant or physio has told you.
