Strength training for hypermobility in Cork

Joints that bend further than they should, ache after ordinary days, click, sublux or just feel loose. Being bendy is not a party trick when it hurts. Strength is what gives hypermobile joints the stability they lack, and our personal trainers build 30-minute sessions around it at our Douglas and Ballincollig gyms, following whatever your physio or consultant has advised.

Hypermobility

Stability comes from muscle, not from stretching

Hypermobile people are often told to stretch. It is the last thing they need. Strength around the joint is what holds it where it should be.

Muscle as the ligament

When ligaments are lax, muscle has to do their job. Strength training builds the muscle that keeps a joint stable through its range.

Control, not range

Sessions focus on controlling the joint inside a safe range rather than going to the end of it. No lockouts, no hanging off the joints.

Slow and steady load

Hypermobile tissue adapts more slowly and flares if rushed. Load goes up in smaller steps than usual and only when a level is solid.

Fatigue and pain

Many hypermobile people are tired and sore a lot. Sessions are 30 minutes, paced, and built around how you are on the day.

Balance and proprioception

Knowing where your joints are in space is harder with hypermobility. Balance and control work is in every session.

With your physio

If you have a diagnosis, physio exercises or a hypermobility clinic plan, we build the programme inside it.

How it works

Training with hypermobility at ATP

Hypermobility, whether it is just bendy joints or part of a diagnosis like hypermobility spectrum disorder or hypermobile Ehlers-Danlos, means the ligaments that should hold your joints in place are too stretchy to do it well. So the joints move too far, the muscles around them work overtime, and the result is pain, fatigue, clicking, and joints that give way or slip out. Most people with it have been told to stretch, which makes it worse, or to avoid the gym, which makes it worse more slowly.

The right answer is the opposite: build strength around the joints so muscle does what the ligaments cannot. It has to be done carefully, with control rather than range, and progressed more slowly than usual, but it is the thing that changes hypermobile lives.

What a session looks like

You train 1:2, one coach and two clients, each on your own programme, for 30 minutes. We work inside a safe range on every movement, never to the end of it, and never locking joints out. Machines and controlled free weights, slow tempos, isometric holds, and plenty of balance and control work. Load goes up in small steps and only when the previous level has felt solid for a while. Tell your coach at the start of every session how the joints are and the plan adjusts.

Working with your physio or consultant

Whatever they have advised, we follow it and build around it. If you have physio exercises or a clinic programme we fold them in and keep progressing them. If you have a diagnosis that comes with cardiac or other considerations, tell us and we plan around it. We are happy to talk to your team directly.

What we are not

We are not physiotherapists and we do not diagnose. We are a coached gym where hypermobile people train carefully, get stronger, and stop dreading their own joints.

FAQ

Hypermobility and training questions

If yours is not here, give us a ring. We would rather talk it through.

Should hypermobile people lift weights?

Yes, and it is one of the best things they can do. Strength around the joints provides the stability the ligaments lack. It has to be coached carefully, inside a safe range, and progressed slowly, which is what we do.

Should I be stretching?

Usually not, or very little. Hypermobile joints already have too much range. What they need is strength and control inside the range, not more of it.

My joints click and sometimes slip. Can I still train?

Most people can, with the right approach. Tell us which joints and what they do, and if you have physio or clinic advice bring it. We build around it.

I get tired and sore very easily. Is that normal?

Common with hypermobility, yes. Sessions are 30 minutes, paced, and built around how you are on the day, and we would rather go too slowly than flare you up.

Do I need a diagnosis first?

No. If you know you are bendy and it causes you trouble, that is enough to start carefully. If you have a diagnosis or a clinic plan, bring it and we work inside it.

Is it a class or personal training?

Personal training, 1:2. One coach with two clients, each on their own programme, with your technique and range coached throughout.

How much does it cost?

Rolling memberships start at €179 every 4 weeks for two sessions a week, and our no-expiry packs never lapse. Your first session is free, no card and no commitment.
