HYROX training in Cork: how to get started

By the ATP Fitness coaching team · 6 July 2026 · 4 min read

If your Instagram feed is anything like ours, HYROX is everywhere right now — and Cork has caught it worse than anywhere. Here’s what it actually is, why it’s taken off, and how to start training for it in Cork this week.

What is HYROX?

HYROX is a fitness race with a fixed format: you run 1km, complete a functional workout station, and repeat — eight times. The stations, in order:

  • 1,000m SkiErg
  • Sled push
  • Sled pull
  • Burpee broad jumps
  • 1,000m row
  • Farmers carry
  • Sandbag lunges
  • Wall balls

Because the format is identical at every event in the world, your finish time is a genuine benchmark — you can race yourself as much as anyone else. Open, doubles and relay divisions mean complete beginners cover the same course as the pros, just at lighter weights and their own pace.

Why HYROX is booming in Cork

Cork’s HYROX simulation events keep selling out — hundreds of athletes have raced sims at Marina Market and Páirc Uí Chaoimh, and new events keep landing. The official HYROX race arrives at the RDS in Dublin this November, and plenty of Cork athletes will be on that start line.

If you’ve been thinking about giving it a go, this is the year.

How do you train for HYROX?

HYROX rewards two things: an engine and functional strength. The mistake most people make is training only one.

A good week of HYROX prep mixes running and rowing fitness with the stations themselves — sled work, carries, lunges and wall balls — done with proper technique under a bit of fatigue, because that’s exactly what race day feels like. For most people, two to three HYROX-style sessions a week alongside some strength work is plenty.

HYROX training at ATP Fitness

We run coached HYROX classes several times a week at both our Ballincollig and Douglas gyms — 45 minutes, small groups, every level welcome. You’ll learn the stations properly with a coach rather than guessing from YouTube, and build the engine the race actually demands.

Racing a sim or heading to the RDS? Your coach will shape your final weeks of prep around it. And if one station is holding you back — sled strength, wall-ball capacity, running economy — our 1:2 personal training is the fastest way to fix a weakness.

HYROX FAQs

Do I need to be fit to start?

No. Classes scale every station to you — turning up is the only requirement.

Do I have to compete?

Not at all. Most of our members train HYROX-style purely because it’s brilliant, measurable training.

How often should I train HYROX?

Two to three sessions a week, mixed with strength work, is plenty for most people. Your coach will guide you from there.
