ATP guide · Neck and shoulder pain
Neck, shoulder and upper back pain from desk work
A neck that clicks, shoulders up round your ears by lunchtime, and an ache between the shoulder blades that no amount of stretching shifts. If that is your week, our personal trainers build 30-minute sessions around it at our Douglas and Ballincollig gyms. Stronger upper backs stop aching. That is the whole idea.
Desk pain and training
Why stretching alone never fixes it
Eight hours a day hunched over a laptop makes the front tight and the back weak. Stretching the front helps for an hour. Strengthening the back fixes it.
The upper back does the work
Rows, pulldowns and face pulls build the muscles between the shoulder blades that hold your head and shoulders where they belong. Most desk pain is those muscles giving up.
Shoulders that sit down
Strong, mobile shoulders stop creeping up towards your ears under stress. We train the muscles that pull them down and back, and the ache goes with it.
Neck strength, gently
A head weighs about five kilos and a laptop tilt doubles the load on the neck. Gentle, specific neck and upper trap work makes it a load you can carry.
Mobility where you need it
Thoracic spine and shoulder mobility built into every session, so you can turn, reach and look up without the crunch.
Headaches and jaw tension
A lot of tension headaches start in the neck and shoulders. People are often surprised what a stronger upper back does for them.
30 minutes, twice a week
Short, coached personal training sessions that fit around a working day. Lunchtimes and early evenings at both gyms.
How it works
Training for desk-related neck and shoulder pain at ATP
If you work at a screen, your body spends most of its life in one shape: head forward, shoulders rounded, upper back slumped. The muscles at the front get short and tight and the muscles at the back get long and weak, and the weak ones are the ones that hurt. Physios call it upper crossed syndrome. Everyone else calls it my neck is at me again.
The fix is not more stretching, or a better chair, though neither hurts. It is making the muscles of the upper back, the shoulders and the neck strong enough to hold you up for eight hours without complaining. That takes progressive loading with proper technique, which is what coaching is for.
What a session looks like
You train 1:2, one coach and two clients, each on your own programme, for 30 minutes. The programme leans heavily on pulling: rows, pulldowns, face pulls, band work for the shoulders, and gentle loaded work for the neck. Thoracic mobility is built in. We train the rest of you too, because a strong body carries a desk job better. Most people feel the daily ache easing within a few weeks and gone within a couple of months.
Working with your physio
If a physio has given you exercises, we fold them into the session and keep progressing them. If your pain is new, severe, comes with pins and needles down the arm, or follows an injury, see your GP or physio first and then come to us.
What we are not
We are not physiotherapists and we do not diagnose. We are a coached gym where desk workers get strong enough that their necks and shoulders stop being a daily topic.
Getting started
Your first session is free. Claim it below and mention the neck or shoulders in the form or when we ring. It is a real coached 30-minute session at Douglas or Ballincollig, no card and no commitment. If it is your lower back, our back pain page covers that, and our training for desk workers page covers the tight hips and posture side.

FAQ
Neck and shoulder pain questions
If yours is not here, give us a ring. We would rather talk it through.
Will lifting weights make my neck and shoulders worse?
Done properly, the opposite. Strengthening the upper back and the muscles that hold the shoulders down is the most reliable way to stop desk-related neck and shoulder pain. We keep the loads light at first and technique tight.
I stretch every day and it still hurts. Why?
Because stretching addresses the tight side but not the weak side. The muscles between the shoulder blades need to get stronger, not just the chest looser. Do both.
Can strength training help with tension headaches?
Often, yes. Many tension headaches start in the neck and upper traps, and people frequently notice fewer of them once the upper back gets stronger. If headaches are severe or new, see your GP first.
Do I need a physio or a gym?
If the pain is new, severe, or shooting down the arm, physio or GP first. If it is the ordinary desk ache that comes and goes, a coached strength programme is usually what fixes it for good.
How often do I need to train?
Two 30-minute sessions a week is enough for most desk workers to see a real change within a couple of months.
Is it a class or personal training?
Personal training, 1:2. One coach with two clients, each on their own programme, so the work is built around your neck and shoulders rather than a class routine.
How much does it cost?
Rolling memberships start at €179 every 4 weeks for two sessions a week, and our no-expiry packs never lapse. Your first session is free, no card and no commitment.

In their own words, straight from Google.
"My sessions at ATP are the best thing I do for myself all week; every week! The PTs are very friendly and always check in how I am feeling at the start of the session. There's plenty of equipment and variety in the PT sessions. The PTs are also interested in any physio feedback and incorporating that into the session."
"The trainers are so friendly and meet you where you’re at on any given day, while also being encouraging and pushing you out of your comfort zone. I’ve found the atmosphere in other gyms to be a bit intimidating but it’s a really relaxed and positive atmosphere in ATP, which I’ve found to be conducive to a sustainable routine."
"Love the variety of classes available at ATP. The classes suit all fitness levels and the trainers are always happy to suggest alternative movements if you’re carrying an injury. Plus there’s a great community vibe in the gym"
"Great gym that has such welcoming staff and have created a really positive training environment. They really listen to your goals and are always there with great advice if you have any questions or injuries that you need to work around when training."
