Strength training for bone health in Cork
Been told you have osteopenia, osteoporosis or low muscle mass? Properly coached resistance training is one of the best things you can do about it. We coach it as personal training, gently and progressively, at our Douglas and Ballincollig gyms.
Bone and muscle health
Why lifting is the answer, not the risk
Bone responds to load. So does muscle. The research is clear and it is why GPs and physios now send people to us rather than away from the weights.
Load builds bone
Bone gets denser when it is asked to carry more. Progressive resistance training and safe impact work are the exercise approaches with the best evidence for osteopenia and osteoporosis.
Muscle protects you
Sarcopenia, the loss of muscle with age, is what makes falls and fractures more likely. Strength training is the only thing that reliably reverses it.
Coached throughout
Personal training with a coach beside you. Technique is coached throughout, and the movements that matter (hip hinge, squat, carry, press, row) are taught from scratch.
Built around your advice
Whatever your GP, consultant or physio has advised, we work to it and build the programme around it, including what to avoid.
Balance and confidence
Sessions include balance and stability work, because the point is not just a number on a scan, it is not falling in the first place.
Nutrition alongside
Protein, calcium and vitamin D habits that support what you do in the gym, through our habit-based nutrition coaching if you want it.
How it works
Training safely with osteopenia, osteoporosis or sarcopenia
Most people who get a low bone density result are told two things: take the supplement and do some exercise. The second part is where it usually falls down, because nobody explains what kind of exercise, how much, or how to do it without hurting yourself. Walking is good for the heart but it does very little for bone. What bone needs is load, applied progressively and with good technique. That is exactly what we coach.
The same goes for sarcopenia. From our 40s we lose muscle every year unless we train, and by our 60s and 70s that loss is what turns a trip into a fracture. Resistance training two or three times a week is the single most effective treatment there is for it, at any age.
What we do differently
You are never on a gym floor on your own. Every session at ATP is coached 1:2, one coach with two clients, each on their own programme. For anyone with a bone density diagnosis that matters, because the details matter: keeping a neutral spine under load, avoiding loaded forward bending and twisting if you have osteoporosis in the spine, building the hips and legs first, and adding load in small steps so the bone adapts without the risk.
Our coaches have backgrounds in rehab and return to fitness. Aishling, our Head of Nutrition, is completing a Masters in Physiotherapy. Katie works as a senior occupational therapist alongside coaching. We are used to working alongside GPs, consultants and physios, and we are happy to talk to yours.
What a programme looks like
The first few weeks are about learning the movements with light loads: a hinge, a squat to a box, a row, a press, and carrying weight while walking. Then the load goes up gradually, session by session, because that steady progression is what builds bone and muscle. We add balance work throughout. Two sessions a week is the sweet spot, and most people notice they move more confidently within a month or two, long before any scan changes.
What we are not
We are not a medical service and we will not pretend to be. We do not diagnose, we do not replace your physio, and we will ask what guidance you have been given so we can follow it. What we are is a coached gym where people with these diagnoses train safely every week, get stronger, and stop being afraid of the weights room.

Not sure what counts as weight-bearing exercise? Our weight-bearing exercise page explains it plainly. Just had a scan? What to do after a low bone density result walks through the first month. And if you are in your 60s or 70s, our over 60s training page is written for you. And if arthritis is part of the picture, our rheumatoid arthritis and osteoarthritis pages cover training around sore joints.

FAQ
Bone health questions
If yours is not here, give us a ring. We would rather talk it through.
Is it safe to lift weights with osteoporosis?
For most people, yes, and it is recommended, as long as it is coached and progressed properly. We follow the guidance from your GP or physio, keep the spine neutral under load and build up gradually. Some movements are avoided, and we will tell you which.
I have osteopenia, not osteoporosis. Should I start now?
Yes. Osteopenia is the point where training makes the biggest difference, because the aim is to stop it progressing. Strength training now is far easier than dealing with a fracture later.
What is sarcopenia and can training reverse it?
Sarcopenia is age-related muscle loss. Resistance training is the most effective treatment for it at any age, and it is exactly what we coach.
Do I need my doctor's permission?
If you have a diagnosis, talk to your GP or physio first and tell us what they advise. We are happy to work alongside them.
I have never lifted weights and I am in my 60s. Is that OK?
It is very common here. We start light, teach the movements properly, and coach you throughout. Age is not a barrier.
Will walking or swimming do the same job?
They are good for you, but they do not load bone the way strength training does. The evidence for bone density is strongest for progressive resistance and impact work.
Do you run bone health classes in Cork?
Not classes as such. Bone health training at ATP is coached personal training, 1:2, one coach and two clients, because the details of technique and load matter too much for a big group. It costs less than most people expect, from €20.56 a session on a rolling membership, and your first session is free.
How much does it cost?
Rolling memberships from €179 every 4 weeks for two sessions a week, or no-expiry packs. Your first session is free.
