Strength training for men over 50 in Cork
The belly has arrived, the strength has gone quiet, the knees complain on the stairs and the GP has started using words like cholesterol. You do not need a bootcamp. You need a coach, a plan and 30 minutes twice a week. Our personal trainers build exactly that at our Douglas and Ballincollig gyms.
Men over 50
What changes after 50, and what fixes it
Men lose muscle faster from 50 on, testosterone drifts down, and the weight moves to the middle. Strength training is the single thing that pushes back on all three.
Muscle is the priority
Cardio is grand, but it does not stop the muscle loss that makes men weaker every year past 50. Lifting does, and it is never too late to start.
The middle
Belly fat after 50 is hormonal and it responds to strength training plus a few food habits, not to hours on a treadmill.
Knees, backs and shoulders
Old injuries and stiff joints are worked around, not through. Stronger muscles around them is what makes the stairs and the golf easier.
The numbers at the GP
Blood pressure, cholesterol, blood sugar. Regular strength training improves all three, and we work to whatever your GP has advised.
No ego, no mirrors
Small gyms, coached sessions, all ages and shapes. Nobody is filming themselves. A lot of our members are men who swore they would never join a gym.
30 minutes, twice a week
Short, coached, done. It fits around work and family and it is enough to change how you feel in a couple of months.
Real Google reviews
From members who started where you are
In their own words, straight from Google.
"I am in the older gentleman brigade doing my best to fight old age, and with the help of the team at ATP I have been mostly successful. I feel better, I'm not as tired and I like me more. You'll find a very supportive and friendly community at ATP."
"I have been doing PT now for about 6 weeks and I am feeling physically stronger than I have in decades. The gang at ATP make you feel very welcome and comfortable. They are encouraging, energetic and resourceful but never push me beyond what I think safe & comfortable. My wife has since joined as well and is loving it."
"At first I was a bit sceptical maybe a bit nervous about PT because I had never gone to gym knowing what I was actually doing. Finally i took the plunge in August and i havent looked back and i actually enjoy it immensely. I've been going twice a week since and ive been reaping the rewards both physically and mentally, i do a bit of running and those good old lunges have helped !"
"I've always gone to the gym over the years but had never had a pt up until this year. … I didn't think I'd enjoy them but the lads and ladies in ATP are great, making sure you're doing the exercises correctly and having a bit of craic at the same time. Didn't think I'd enjoy them but found I really do."
How it works
Getting strong again after 50
Most men over 50 who walk into ATP have not lifted a weight since their 20s, or ever. They played sport, they stopped, work and family took over, and somewhere along the way the body got heavier, weaker and stiffer. It is not laziness. Muscle loss speeds up from 50, hormones shift, and unless you give the body a reason to keep muscle it will not.
The reason is strength training. Not a bootcamp, not a boxing class, not an hour of running that the knees will not thank you for. Two short, coached sessions a week where you learn to squat, hinge, push, pull and carry with good technique and steadily increasing load. It is the most effective thing a man over 50 can do for how he looks, how he feels and how long he stays independent.
What a session looks like
You train 1:2, one coach and two clients, each on your own programme, for 30 minutes. The first few weeks are about technique and finding sensible starting loads, working around whatever the knees, back or shoulders have to say. Then the loads go up, gradually and safely, week after week. Some steady work on the bike or rower is built in for the heart. Two sessions a week is the sweet spot.
Working with your GP
If you have blood pressure, cholesterol, blood sugar or a heart history in the picture, tell us and we build around whatever your GP has advised. Regular strength training helps all of those numbers, and we are happy to talk to your GP if it helps.

FAQ
Men over 50 questions
If yours is not here, give us a ring. We would rather talk it through.
Am I too old to start lifting weights at 50 or 55?
No. Men in their 50s, 60s and 70s build muscle and strength just fine with the right programme. Later is harder than sooner, so now is the time.
I have a bad back and dodgy knees. Can I still train?
Almost certainly. We work around old injuries and stiff joints rather than through them, and stronger muscles around a joint usually mean less pain, not more. If you have a physio or consultant, we follow their advice.
Will strength training help with the belly?
Yes, combined with a few food habits. Muscle is what changes how the body handles fat after 50. Cardio on its own rarely shifts a middle-aged middle.
Is the gym full of young lads?
No. Both gyms are small and coached, and the age range runs from teens to people in their 70s. A lot of our members are men who avoided gyms for years.
How many times a week?
Two 30-minute sessions is the sweet spot for most men starting out. Three if you have the time and the recovery. Walking and golf on the other days is perfect.
Do I need my GP's OK?
If you have a heart history, high blood pressure or another condition, a quick word with your GP first is sensible. Then tell us what they said and we build around it.
How much does it cost?
Rolling memberships start at €179 every 4 weeks for two sessions a week, and our no-expiry packs never lapse. Your first session is free, no card and no commitment.
