Over 40s training

Why strength matters more after 40

From our 40s on we lose a little muscle every year unless we do something about it. Lifting, done properly, is the something.

Stronger bones and joints

Loading the body sensibly keeps bone density up and takes pressure off knees, hips and backs. Most of our over 40s members move better within a few weeks.

Your own programme

You are coached 1:2, one coach and two clients, each on your own plan. Nobody is asked to keep up with the person beside them.

Built around your body

Old injuries, a dodgy knee, a stiff back. We work with what you bring and alongside whatever your physio has advised.

Energy, not exhaustion

Sessions are 30 minutes and you leave feeling better than you arrived. That is the whole idea.

Weight loss that lasts

Muscle keeps your metabolism honest. Pair the training with our habit-based nutrition coaching if you want to lose weight too.

A friendly room

A lot of our members are in their 40s, 50s and 60s. Beginners train beside regulars and nobody is looking at anyone.

How it works

Starting strength training in your 40s, 50s or 60s

Most people who come to us over 40 say the same thing: they used to be active, life got busy, and now the body is starting to complain. A stiff back on Monday morning, knees that notice the stairs, less energy than there used to be. None of that is a reason to stay away from the gym. It is the reason to come.

Strength training is the single most useful thing an adult over 40 can do for how they feel day to day. It protects bone density, keeps muscle on the frame, helps with balance, and makes every other part of life a bit easier, from carrying shopping to keeping up with the kids or grandkids. The research on this is clear and it holds whether you are 42 or 68.

What a session actually looks like

You train 1:2 at ATP: one coach, two clients, each following their own programme. Your first few sessions are about learning the basic patterns properly, a squat, a hinge, a push and a pull, with light loads and a coach beside you the whole time. Nothing is rushed. As the movements become second nature the weights go up gradually, and that steady progress is where the results come from.

Sessions are 30 minutes and you can book mornings, lunchtimes or evenings six days a week, at either Douglas or Ballincollig. Two sessions a week is the sweet spot for most people starting out.

Injuries, aches and the things you are worried about

Tell us everything at the start. A replaced hip, a bad shoulder, a back that goes every so often. We build around it rather than through it, and we are happy to work alongside your physio or GP. Several of our coaches have backgrounds in rehab and return to fitness, and our Head of Nutrition, Aishling, is completing a Masters in Physiotherapy.

Bone density and muscle loss

If you have been told you have osteopenia, osteoporosis or sarcopenia, we have a dedicated page on how we coach around it. It is one of the most common reasons people over 50 come to us. Women going through perimenopause or menopause will find more on our menopause strength training page.

In your 60s or 70s? We have a page written for exactly that stage, strength training over 60 in Cork, and if bone density is the reason you are here, our bone health page explains how we coach it. Golfer? Our golf fitness page is worth a read too.

"I was apprehensive about training after severe back injury and my concerns were fully taken on board when starting training and a plan was put in place. I’ve been training and pain free for over a year now thanks to them and never felt better."

FAQ

Over 40s training questions

If yours is not here, give us a ring. We would rather talk it through.

Am I too old to start lifting weights?

No. We coach people from their 40s into their 70s. The weights start light and the technique comes first, so age is not the barrier people expect it to be.

I have a bad back or knee. Can I still train?

Almost always, yes. Tell your coach at the free session and we will build the programme around it, alongside whatever your physio or doctor has advised.

How often should I train over 40?

Two coached sessions a week is enough for most people to see real change in strength and how they feel. Three is great if your week allows it.

Is this a group class or personal training?

Personal training, 1:2. One coach with two clients, each on their own programme. You are never asked to keep pace with anyone else.

Will lifting make me bulky?

No. Building muscle takes years of very deliberate work. What you will notice is feeling firmer, stronger and more energetic.

How much does it cost?

Rolling memberships start at €179 every 4 weeks for two sessions a week, and our no-expiry packs never lapse. Your first session is free.

Which gym should I come to?

Whichever is handier. We are in Douglas on the south side and Ballincollig on the west side of Cork, and your credits work at both.
