The People's Gym · Cork
Strength training over 60 in Cork
Coached strength sessions for people in their 60s, 70s and beyond at our Douglas and Ballincollig gyms. Stronger bones, better balance, and the muscle to keep doing what you love. No bootcamp, just a coach beside you.
Over 60s training
It is not too late. It is the best time
Muscle and bone respond to training at any age. The people in their 70s who lift with us are the proof.
Bone density
Progressive loading is the exercise with the best evidence for slowing bone loss and, for many people, improving it. It is the reason GPs now send people to us.
Balance and falls
Every programme includes balance and stability work. Stronger legs and better balance are what stop a trip becoming a fracture.
Muscle you can feel
From our 60s muscle goes faster unless we train. Two sessions a week brings it back, and you notice it on the stairs and with the shopping.
Personal training, always
Your own plan and a coach beside you for every session. You are never left on the gym floor working out what to do next.
Around your body
A replaced hip, a stiff shoulder, a heart tablet, a back that goes. Tell us everything and we build around it, alongside your GP or physio.
A room you will like
A good share of our members are in their 60s and 70s. Beginners train beside regulars and nobody is looking at anyone.
Real Google reviews
From members who started where you are
In their own words, straight from Google.
"As a woman in my 60’s starting with ATP has been a game changer and this is my first time ever committing to a gym. This is all down to the amazing trainers… They will challenge me but always make sure I’m doing the exercises safely. Would recommend ATP 100% for any age, any shape, any level of fitness."
"I am in the older gentleman brigade doing my best to fight old age, and with the help of the team at ATP I have been mostly successful. I feel better, I'm not as tired and I like me more. You'll find a very supportive and friendly community at ATP."
"I recently had both hips replaced so I joined ATP Ballincollig about 5 weeks ago to build up my strength again. I’ve worked with every coach and they are all fantastic. The knowledge they have is exceptional. Always a very positive atmosphere, great banter and a guaranteed well balanced workout."
"Staff are professional, knowledgeable, encouraging and friendly. Suitable for all ages. Retired myself, never too late to start!! Personal Training(PT) package, 30 minute sessions just right for me. Lovely atmosphere, would recommend highly."
How it works
Starting the gym in your 60s or 70s
A lot of people who ring us at this stage say the same thing: I have never been in a gym in my life, I do not know what to do, and I do not want to hurt myself. That is exactly who these sessions are for. You do not need to know anything on day one. You need a coach who does, and a plan that starts where you are.
The case for lifting after 60 is now about as solid as anything in health. It slows bone loss, rebuilds muscle, improves balance, helps with blood sugar and blood pressure, and it is the single most useful thing you can do to stay independent. Walking and gardening are great, but they do not ask the body to adapt the way lifting does.
What a session looks like
You train 1:2, one coach and two clients, each on your own programme. The first few weeks are about learning a handful of movements with light loads: sitting down to a box and standing up, a hip hinge, a row, a press, and carrying weight while you walk. Then the weight goes up a little at a time, session by session, and that steady progression is where the results come from. Balance work is in every session. Most people are pleasantly surprised how quickly they progress once someone shows them properly.
Aches, conditions and the things you are worried about
Tell us everything at your first session. Arthritis, a replaced joint, blood pressure medication, a bone density result, a fall last year. None of these rule you out. We build around them and we are happy to work alongside your GP, consultant or physio. If you have been told you have osteopenia or osteoporosis, our bone health page explains how we coach that, and our weight-bearing exercise page explains what actually builds bone. Waiting for, or recovering from, a new hip or knee? Our hip and knee replacement page covers both.
How often, and how much
Two sessions a week is the sweet spot. Sessions are 30 minutes, mornings, lunchtimes and evenings six days a week, at Douglas or Ballincollig, and your credits work at both. Rolling memberships start at €179 every 4 weeks for two sessions a week, and our no-expiry packs never lapse, which suits people who travel or mind grandchildren.

FAQ
Over 60s training questions
If yours is not here, give us a ring. We would rather talk it through.
Am I too old to start strength training at 65 or 70?
No. We coach people into their 70s and beyond, many of whom had never been in a gym before. The weights start light, technique comes first, and the body adapts at any age.
Is it safe to lift weights with arthritis or a replaced hip or knee?
Usually, yes, and it often helps. Tell your coach at the free session, along with whatever your consultant or physio has advised. We build around it.
Will strength training help my balance?
Yes. Stronger legs and hips, plus the balance work built into every programme, are the most effective things there are for reducing falls.
I have low bone density. Is the gym the right place?
It is one of the best places. Progressive resistance training is the exercise with the strongest evidence for bone. See our bone health page for how we coach it safely.
Is it a class or personal training?
Personal training, 1:2. One coach with two clients, each on their own programme. You are never asked to keep pace with anyone else.
Can I come with a friend or my husband or wife?
Yes, and lots of people do. Our sessions are 1:2, so two of you can book the same slot with the one coach, each on your own programme.
How much does it cost?
Rolling memberships start at €179 every 4 weeks for two sessions a week, and our no-expiry packs never lapse. Your first session is free, no card and no commitment.
