Step by step
What a teen session actually looks like
Nobody gets left on a machine in the corner. A coach is with them the whole way through.
We meet them first
A quick chat about what sport they play, what they want out of it, and anything we should know. Drop them over to us and we will take it from there.
We teach the movements
Squat, hinge, push, pull, carry. Light weight and proper technique until it looks right every rep, because that is the part that keeps them safe.
We build from there
Strength and speed added bit by bit as they earn it. They leave every session knowing what they did and why they did it.
Built for Cork sport
Strength that shows up on the pitch
Most of the teenagers we coach play something. What they do in here is meant to make them better out there.
GAA, hurling and camogie
The engine, the change of direction and the contact side of the game, so they still hold their own when it gets physical late in a match.
Soccer
Single leg strength, sprint mechanics and strong hips. The stuff that makes a player quicker over five metres and steadier on the turn.
Rugby
Sensible strength work with a solid base through the neck, shoulders and trunk, built slowly and always coached.
Swimming, athletics and rowing
Shoulders and a trunk that can handle the volume, plus the power work their sport usually leaves out.
Around a busy season
Training is planned around matches, trials and exams, so they are not wrecked going into the weekend.
Not into sport at all
Plenty of teenagers just want to get stronger, feel better and be comfortable in a gym. That is a perfectly good reason to start.

FAQ
Teen training questions parents ask
If yours is not here, give us a ring. We would rather talk it through than have you guessing.
Is strength training safe for teenagers?
Yes. Coached, age appropriate strength training is one of the safest things a teenager can do, and the research backs that up. The risk comes from bad technique and too much weight too soon, which is exactly what a coach is there to prevent. Every teen session at ATP is supervised start to finish.
Will lifting weights stunt their growth?
No. That idea has been around for years and the evidence does not support it. Properly coached strength work is good for growing bones, joints and tendons. What causes problems is unsupervised lifting with heavy weight and poor form.
What ages do you take?
Our Teen PT packs cover ages 11 to 17. From 18 they move on to our standard adult personal training.
What does a teen session involve?
A warm up, then coached strength and movement work, then something a bit more fun to finish, usually conditioning or a bit of competition. Sessions run for 30 minutes.
Do I need to stay for the session?
No need. Drop them over and collect them after, and the coach will let you know how they got on. If anything needs a longer chat we will give you a ring.
How often should they train?
Twice a week suits most teenagers, especially ones already playing a sport. Once a week still works if the schedule is packed. We will be straight with you about what makes sense.
Do the sessions expire?
No. Teen PT credits never lapse, so a busy few weeks of school or matches does not cost you anything.
Which gym do we go to?
Either one. We are in Douglas and Ballincollig, and credits work across both, so you can pick whichever suits the week.
What should they bring?
Runners, comfortable gym gear and a water bottle. That is it.
