Training with a friend or partner

Some people will never walk into a gym alone and would happily go with someone. Because every session at ATP is one coach with two clients, you and your partner, friend, parent or grown-up child can book the same slot and be the pair, each on your own programme, at our Douglas and Ballincollig gyms.

Pairs

Two people, two programmes, one coach

You do not have to be the same age, the same fitness or want the same thing. You just have to want the same half hour.

Each on your own programme

A 60-year-old mother and her daughter, a couple where one runs and one has a bad back. Different programmes, same session, same coach.

Half an hour together

For couples with kids it is often the only half hour in the week that is not about logistics. For friends it is a standing date that actually happens.

Accountability

Cancelling on yourself is easy. Cancelling on your sister is not. Pairs turn up more, and turning up is most of the result.

Nervous? Bring someone

If a gym is daunting, walking in with a friend takes most of the fear out of it. A lot of pairs start that way and keep going solo.

Book the same slot

Both of you book the same session through the app, or tell us and we will set it up. Nothing extra to organise.

Same price each

You each pay your own membership or pack. There is no couples surcharge and no bundle you have to buy.

"My wife has been training with ATP for about 6 months and was egging me on to join (nothing to do with her getting free points I swear !) At first I was a bit sceptical maybe a bit nervous about PT because I had never gone to gym knowing what I was actually doing. Finally i took the plunge in August and i havent looked back and i actually enjoy it immensely."

"I have been doing PT now for about 6 weeks and I am feeling physically stronger than I have in decades. The gang at ATP make you feel very welcome and comfortable. They are encouraging, energetic and resourceful but never push me beyond what I think safe & comfortable. My wife has since joined as well and is loving it."

"I've been to quite a few gyms over the years but ATP is where I've felt most comfortable. I love that you can walk in the door & theres never any judgement... I've shared many a sweaty headshake with other members :) The classes are great & my only problem now is vying with my husband to book in first!"

How it works

Training as a pair at ATP

Every personal training session at ATP is 1:2: one coach with two clients, each on your own programme, for 30 minutes. Usually the two are whoever booked the slot. But if you would rather choose the person beside you, book with someone you know and you are the pair. Husbands and wives, friends, mothers and daughters, fathers and sons, brothers, colleagues. It is one of the nicest ways to train and it needs nothing extra to arrange.

What a session looks like

You both arrive for the booked slot. Your coach has both programmes up, and they are different, because you are different people with different bodies and goals. You warm up together, then the coach sets one of you on a set while the other rests, and swaps. Thirty minutes later you are both done, both coached, both logged. You can chat between sets or not. Some pairs are competitive, some are quiet, both are fine.

Different levels, different goals

This is the question everyone asks and the answer is that it does not matter. One of you might be training for a marathon and the other rebuilding after a hip replacement. Each programme is written for that person, so the fit one is never held back and the nervous one is never pushed to keep up. If one of you has a condition or advice from a GP or physio, it is built into their programme and nobody else's.

FAQ

Training as a pair questions

If yours is not here, give us a ring. We would rather talk it through.

Can my partner and I train together?

Yes. Book the same 30-minute slot and you are the pair. Each of you has your own programme and the coach runs both.

What if one of us is much fitter than the other?

It does not matter. You are each on your own programme, so nobody is held back and nobody is pushed to keep up.

Is it cheaper as a couple?

You each pay your own membership or pack at the normal price. There is no couples surcharge and no bundle you have to buy.

Can we train with the same coach every time?

Yes, if their slots suit. Or book whoever is on when you can both make it. Both programmes live in the system.

What if one of us cannot make it one week?

The other still trains. You would be paired with whoever else booked the slot, on your own programme as always, and the absent person's pack sits there until they are back.

Can three of us come?

Sessions are one coach with two clients, so a third person books the next slot or another coach's. Tell us and we will make it work.

How much does it cost?

Rolling memberships start at €179 every 4 weeks for two sessions a week, and our no-expiry packs never lapse. Your first session is free, no card and no commitment.
