Exercise for type 2 diabetes and prediabetes in Cork
A blood test, a word with the GP, and the advice to lose a bit of weight and get more active. Most people leave with the what and none of the how. Our personal trainers build 30-minute sessions around it at our Douglas and Ballincollig gyms, following whatever your GP or diabetes nurse has advised.
Diabetes and training
Why muscle is the best thing you can do for blood sugar
Muscle is where most of the sugar in your blood ends up. More of it, used regularly, means better numbers. That is the short version.
Muscle uses sugar
Every time a muscle works it pulls glucose out of the blood, and stronger muscles do it better. Strength training is now recommended alongside walking for exactly this reason.
Prediabetes is the best time
If you have been told your numbers are borderline, this is the stage where training and habits change the outcome. Many people bring the numbers back down.
Weight, done kindly
Losing weight helps, but crash diets do not last. Our habit-based nutrition coaching runs alongside the training if you want it, one change at a time.
Energy, not exhaustion
Sessions are 30 minutes and you leave feeling better than you arrived. Tiredness and low energy are the norm when sugar is high, so we start where you are.
Working with your GP
Whatever your GP or diabetes nurse has advised, we follow it. If you are on medication that affects blood sugar, tell us and we plan sessions around it.
Feet, eyes and the rest
We take the sensible precautions: good footwear, no barefoot work, and a coach beside you. Tell us anything your GP has flagged and we build around it.
How it works
Training with type 2 diabetes or prediabetes at ATP
Type 2 diabetes and the stage before it, prediabetes, are among the most common diagnoses handed out in Ireland, and exercise is at the top of every treatment guideline. Walking is good. What most people are not told is that strength training does something walking cannot: it builds the muscle that soaks up sugar from the blood, and it keeps working between sessions. The guidelines now recommend both, two or three strength sessions a week alongside regular walking.
Nobody expects you to work that out alone, or to walk into a gym for the first time in twenty years and know what to do. That is what the coaching is for.
What a session looks like
You train 1:2, one coach and two clients, each on your own programme, for 30 minutes. The first weeks are about learning a handful of movements with light loads: sitting to a box and standing, a hinge, a row, a press, a carry. Then the load climbs gradually, because bigger, stronger muscles are the point. Two sessions a week is the sweet spot, and we will help you fit walking around it.
Food, weight and the numbers
Training and food together is where the results come from. If you want help with the food side, our habit-based nutrition coaching is built for exactly this: one realistic change at a time, no crash diets, and a coach checking in. Many people see their HbA1c and their weight move within a few months. If you have been prescribed a GLP-1 medication as part of the plan, our training on GLP-1s page explains why strength training matters even more.
Working with your GP or diabetes nurse
Whatever they have advised, we follow it and build the programme around it. If you are on medication that can lower blood sugar, tell us, and we will talk about timing and what to bring to a session. We are happy to talk to your GP or nurse directly if that helps.
What we are not
We are not a medical service. We do not diagnose, we do not adjust medication, and we do not replace your GP, diabetes nurse or dietitian. We are a coached gym where people with type 2 diabetes and prediabetes train safely every week and see their numbers improve.

FAQ
Diabetes and training questions
If yours is not here, give us a ring. We would rather talk it through.
Does strength training help with type 2 diabetes?
Yes. Muscle is the main place the body stores and uses sugar, so building it and using it regularly improves blood sugar control. Guidelines now recommend two or three strength sessions a week alongside walking.
I am prediabetic. Is it worth starting now?
It is the best time to start. Prediabetes is the stage where training and a few habit changes can bring the numbers back into the normal range and keep them there.
Is it safe to train if I am on diabetes medication?
Usually yes, with a little planning. Some medications can lower blood sugar during exercise, so tell us what you are on and we will talk about timing and what to bring. We follow whatever your GP or diabetes nurse has advised.
I am overweight and have never been in a gym. Will I feel out of place?
No. A good share of our members started exactly there. Sessions are coached, the room is small and friendly, and nobody is looking at anyone.
How quickly will my blood sugar improve?
Many people see a difference in their readings within weeks and in their HbA1c within a few months of training twice a week and tidying up the food. Everyone is different, and your GP tracks the numbers.
Do you help with the food side too?
Yes, if you want it. Our habit-based nutrition coaching is built for exactly this, one realistic change at a time, no crash diets.
How much does it cost?
Rolling memberships start at €179 every 4 weeks for two sessions a week, and our no-expiry packs never lapse. Your first session is free, no card and no commitment.
